Description
About: Hypericum, otherwise known as the gift that keeps on giving. Why? After flowering, they produce beautiful, festive berries! Hypericum is native to the Mediterranean region of Europe, northern Africa, and the Middle East and come in hundreds of different varieties. In many regions, hypericum was used to treat bruises, burns, and superficial injuries. Essentially, the crushed plant material (wet leaves, flowers, fruit) was mixed with vegetable oil, set in the sun, and allowed to ferment for several weeks. The fruits and seeds of all Hypericum plants are considered toxic and will cause digestive distress if eaten. Fermented, hypericum are not medically proven to heal bruising, or superficial injury. However they still are well known for their visual beauty and interest when paired with beautiful cut flowers.
